Design of a race car

The aim of this project, in cooperation with Ugent racing, was to design a racing car using techniques such as: clay modelling, 3D scanning, reverse engineering and subdevision modelling.

The type of car to which the design is applied is an FSAE racing car. No volume may be built above the wheels. There is slight clearance at the front, rear and sides of the car. In general, the car is divided into, firstly, the front. This is the volume in front of the steering wheel and the first pair of wheels. Then there is the middle, between the wheels, which contains a kink in the frame that goes between the steering wheel and the seat frame. Finally, there is the rear of the car.

The final design is a car of which the shapes in the side view are inspired by the transitions between the muscles of a Jaguar. A continuous chamfered plane forms the coherent loop between the front and rear. This line is accentuated by both raised relief, inspired by the kink at the jaguar’s shoulder blades that breaks the continuity of the line, and colour, inspired by the neon/night look found in cyberpunk. The effective use of colour is based on the colours of UGent racing itself.
